What ARW is
ARW is Sony's raw image format. Sony also uses the related SRF and SR2 extensions on some older camera models; all three are accepted here and decoded the same way.
Why convert it
An ARW keeps far more of the sensor's original data than a JPEG, which is why photo editors want it — but most viewers, messaging apps, and websites can't open it directly. Converting to JPG gives you something you can view, share, or upload anywhere.
Orientation is preserved
The camera's orientation tag stored in the ARW is read and applied before the pixels are returned, so the output JPG comes out the right way up rather than needing a manual rotate.
Quality control
You can set the output JPEG quality before converting. Since an ARW starts with substantially more detail than a JPEG, a higher quality setting is worth considering if file size isn't a concern.
