What NEF is
NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format, the raw file written by Nikon's D-series DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras. It is a TIFF-based file holding the sensor's 12- or 14-bit readout. Some Coolpix compacts write a related format with the .NRW extension; both are accepted here and decoded the same way.
NEF and NRW together in one batch
A batch does not have to be one format. Nikon writes NEF on its DSLRs and mirrorless bodies and NRW on some Coolpix models, and both are accepted here, so a folder holding a mixture converts in a single pass without you sorting it first. Add as many as you like — there is no count limit and no charge — and the finished JPGs arrive together as one .zip.
Why convert NEF to JPG
Outside Nikon's own software and the major raw editors, NEF is rarely readable: phones, chat apps, print kiosks and upload forms generally want JPG. Converting gives you a small, universal copy to hand over while the NEF remains your master file.
Vertical frames come out upright
Nikon stores a vertical shot in landscape layout and flags the rotation in the file. That flag is honoured here, so the JPGs do not need a pass through a viewer's rotate button.
Setting the JPG quality
The four quality levels — 100%, 92%, 80% or 60% — apply to the whole batch. An 8-bit JPG cannot hold everything a 14-bit NEF does at any setting, so the choice is really about file size: 92% by default, lower when the pictures are only going on screen.
Frequently asked questions
Are NEF files uploaded to a server?
No. The NEF is decoded and the JPG encoded on your own computer, inside the browser, via WebAssembly. Nothing is transmitted.
Can I convert a folder of NEF files at once?
Yes, and NRW files in the same folder are converted alongside them — you do not need to separate the two. There is no limit on how many files a batch can hold, and the results come back as a single .zip.
Does this also accept NRW files?
Yes — NRW is Nikon's other raw extension, used on some compact cameras, and it's accepted on this page alongside NEF.
Should I shoot NEF + JPEG instead of converting afterwards?
If you always need JPGs straight away, the camera's RAW + JPEG mode makes both at capture, with Picture Control applied. Converting afterwards covers the shots where you only have the NEF, or where you decide later which frames you need.
Can a JPG be turned back into a NEF?
No. Raw sensor data cannot be rebuilt from a JPG, and there is no NEF encoder here.
Are Nikon Picture Control settings applied?
No. Picture Control, Active D-Lighting and similar in-camera settings are recorded in the NEF as notes for Nikon's own software. The JPG here is developed from the sensor data with this tool's own rendering, so it can differ from the camera's preview; edits from a separate editor are not applied either.
