What NEF is
NEF is Nikon's raw image format. Nikon also uses the related NRW extension on some compact cameras; both are accepted here and decoded the same way.
NEF and NRW together in one batch
A batch does not have to be one format. Nikon writes NEF on its DSLRs and mirrorless bodies and NRW on some Coolpix models, and both are accepted here, so a folder holding a mixture converts in a single pass without you sorting it first. Add as many as you like — there is no count limit and no charge — and the finished JPGs arrive together as one .zip.
Why convert it
A NEF keeps far more of the sensor's original data than a JPEG, which is why photo editors want it — but most viewers, messaging apps, and websites can't open it directly. Converting to JPG gives you something you can view, share, or upload anywhere.
Orientation is preserved
The camera's orientation tag stored in the NEF is read and applied before the pixels are returned, so the output JPG comes out the right way up rather than needing a manual rotate.
Quality control
You can set the output JPEG quality before converting. Since a NEF starts with substantially more detail than a JPEG, a higher quality setting is worth considering if file size isn't a concern.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and JPG encoding both happen locally in your browser via WebAssembly; the NEF file never leaves your device.
Can I convert a folder of NEF files at once?
Yes, and NRW files in the same folder are converted alongside them — you do not need to separate the two. There is no limit on how many files a batch can hold, and the results come back as a single .zip.
Does this also accept NRW files?

Will orientation be correct?
