What CR3 is
CR3 is Canon's current raw image format, used by its more recent camera bodies as the successor to CR2. It's a different container than CR2, which is why it gets its own decode path and its own page here.
Why convert it
A CR3 keeps far more of the sensor's original data than a JPEG, which is why photo editors want it — but most viewers, messaging apps, and websites can't open it directly. Converting to JPG gives you something you can view, share, or upload anywhere.
Orientation is preserved
The camera's orientation tag stored in the CR3 is read and applied before the pixels are returned, so the output JPG comes out the right way up rather than needing a manual rotate.
Quality control
You can set the output JPEG quality before converting. Since a CR3 starts with substantially more detail than a JPEG, a higher quality setting is worth considering if file size isn't a concern.
